About Confined Spaces
Confined spaces are workplaces found in many different industries: construction, oil and chemical processing, manufacturing, shipbuilding, agriculture and mining. In addition, many confined spaces can be found in and around ordinary locations: underground access areas for utilities, pipelines, manholes, and storage tanks.
To be considered “confined”, workplace spaces must meet certain requirements:
The space configuration hinders the activities of employees who must enter, work in, and exit them. A confined space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit, and it is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.
|
Permit-Required Confined Space In the United States, OSHA uses the term “permit-required confined space” (permit space) to describe a confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics:
|
Safety Attendants and RecordkeepingPermit-Required Confined Spaces require the role of an attendant outside the confined space to continuously keep track of all the entrants in the confined space they are monitoring, as well as maintain communications with the entrants and entry supervisor.
A common approach to continuously tracking all entrants to the confined space is to keep paper logs of who has entered, what time they entered, and what time they exited. However, paper logs have their limitations - most notably when a confined space has more than one entry point. Either safety attendants have to spend time cross-checking activity on their logs with the other entry point's logs, or occupants are required to exit through the same entry point they entered, which is not always convenient.
XPressEntry overcomes the drawbacks of paper logs:
| Issues with Paper Logs | How XPressEntry solves the problem: | ||||||
| Writing a log entry takes 20-30 seconds - Entrants end up lining up, spending time waiting | Logging an entrant with the XPressEntry handheld takes 5 seconds or less - Less time waiting, more time on the job | ||||||
| A lost, damaged or illegible log means information is lost | Data stored in 3 places: on the handheld, on the server, on the web - and messy handwriting is eliminated | ||||||
| Not easy to determine occupancy, especially in confined spaces with multiple entry points | With every entry and exit, the XPressEntry server automatically updates occupancy, and can relay it to handheld and web | ||||||
| Building an activity history for an individual or company is tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone | Activity history is easily searched and sorted on the server or online, and online reports keep the history organized | ||||||
| Because logging is time-consuming, activity might get unrecorded during time-critical operations like evacuations or rescues | XPressEntry is quick enough when every second counts. Also, the onsite server can be configured as a muster point for incident check-ins | ||||||
| No way to track who is authorized to enter the confined space | XPressEntry maintains a list of authorized entrants, and will alert the attendant when a potential entrant is unauthorized |
